1997 Season
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD QUICK FACTS: In 32 years at Catholic,
Jerry McGee has developed more than 20 Division I, II and III NCAA All-American’s.
He has also twice coached the USA National Team to victories over the
Soviet Union... Paul Drumgoole '94 was McGee's most recent All-American,
taking third in Division III in the indoor 800 meter and second in the
outdoor in 1994... Assistant Coach Mark Robinson won back-to-back Division
II 800 titles in 1974 and 1975... Mike Cowan, who has won the
past two CAC titles in the javelin, is also a starting linebacker on
the football team.
1996-97 MEN'S SEASON IN REVIEW: During the indoor season, freshman
pole vaulter Trevor Orsinger erupted on the scene. Orsinger won
the pole vault at the Lebanon Valley Invitational (13-0), finished second
at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational (13-3), and qualified for
the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston. Senior Sean
Quinn won the 35-pound weight throw (36-11) at the Lebanon Valley
Invitational while setting a meet and arena record. At the Mason-Dixon
Conference championships, Quinn was second in the 35-pound weight throw,
freshman Sean Mullin fourth in the pole vault, and sophomore
Nyaladzi Nthunamo fifth in both the 800 and 1,500 meters.
The outdoor season brought a fifth-place finish at the CAC championships
and sixth-place finish at the Mason-Dixon Conference championships.
Sophomore Mike Cowan won the javelin (178-2.5) at the CAC championships
for the second straight year and made first-team all-CAC. Quinn won
the hammer at the Mason-Dixon championships with a school-record throw
of 136 feet. Quinn also set a meet record in the hammer at the Gettysburg
Invitational, was second at the Christopher Newport Captains Classic,
and third at the CAC championships. Nyaladzi Nthunamo (800) and freshman
Matt Vilord (1,500) made all-Mason-Dixon Conference. Senior Jonathan
Boehmer won the javelin at the Roanoke Invitational with a throw
of 175 feet.

two-time Academic All-American, has received a prestigious Truman Scholarship...
The 1,600 relay team is an annual participant at the Penn Relays.
1996-97 WOMEN'S SEASON IN REVIEW: The women's team had three
athletes qualify for the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships
in Boston. Junior Janet Muckenthaler was third in the pentathlon
(55-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, 800) with 2,855 points.
Last year she was seventh. Freshman Andre Wilson was eighth in
the 200 meters in 27.77 and sophomore Kate Cassidy threw the
shot put 34 feet 2.75 inches to finish 18th.
The outdoor season brought a fifth-place finish at the CAC championships
and sixth-place finish at the Mason-Dixon Conference championships.
Sophomore Anne Connolly was runner-up in the 5,000 meters (18.57)
at the CAC championships and made second-team all-CAC. She won the 5,000
meters at both the Gettysburg and Messiah Invitationals. Muckenthaler
(100, 800, 100 hurdles, high jump, long jump, discus), Cassidy (discus)
and Connolly (3,000 & 5,000) made all-Mason-Dixon Conference. Muckenthaler,
who was named GTE District II Academic All-American for the second straight
year, was third in the heptathlon (100 hurdles, high jump, shot put,
200, long jump, javelin, 800) with 4,147 points at the ECAC Outdoor
Track & Field championships. Her total was just 103 points off the
NCAA qualifying standard and ranked 21st nationally for the outdoor
season. At the Bridgewater Invitational, Muckenthaler placed in nine
different events, finishing in the top three in seven. Connolly was
seventh in the 5,000 meters (18:40.12) at the ECAC championships.
