CLIFFORD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN (Jan. 10, 2006)

WASHINGTON, D.C.--  Defenseman Jerry Clifford has been named an Honorable Mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse magazine. Clifford, a senior from Milton High School in Hyde Park, Mass., led the Cardinals defense in takeaways and was a team leader in ground balls.  In just his second year with the team, Clifford amassed more than 50 takeaways and 100 ground balls.

KELLY NAMED CUA ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FOR 2004-'05

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Senior men's lacrosse player Conor Kelly has earned Catholic University's Male Athlete of the Year award.

Kelly, who in three seasons has tallied 148 points, has established himself among the top attackmen in the country.  He was selected to the CAC All-Conference team in 2005.  As the team’s leading scorer and top offensive threat, he draws each opponent’s top defenders.  He earned CAC Player of the Week honors in April 2005, as the Cardinals’ leading scorer in a pair of one-goal losses to conclude the season. Kelly scored six goals against St. Mary’s in a 13-12 loss and three goals against Mary Washington in the opening round of the CAC playoffs.  He is regarded as one of the hardest working athletes in the CAC and among the top riding defenders in the country. 

Kelly has helped the young Cardinal lacrosse program build from one win in 1998 to a consistent winner, finishing 9-5 in 2004, and 8-6 in 2005, losing to three top-ranked opponents by one goal.  Kelly seeks to conclude his career by leading the Cardinals to yet another winning season.

Clifford, Kelly Named to Capital Athletic Conference Teams

WASHINGTON (May 19, 2005) -- Men's lacrosse standouts Jerry Clifford and Conor Kelly capped outstanding regular seasons by being chosen members of the Capital Athletic Conference teams. Clifford made the first team as a defenseman and Kelly made the second team as an attacker.

Clifford, a junior from Milton High School in Hyde Park, Mass., led the Cardinals defense in takeaways and was a team leader in ground balls. He anchored the defense by shutting down key attackmen with speed and aggression. In just his second year with the team, Clifford amassed more than 50 takeaways and 100 ground balls. With this selection, he is recognized as one of the top defensemen in the nation.

Kelly, from Boston College High School in Milton, Mass., ranked among conference leaders in several offensive categories including: second in goals per game (2.79) and shots per game (7.43), third in points per game (4), and 10th in assists per game (1.21). He finished the season with 40 goals and 17 assists for a team-leading total of 57 points. He also had 39 ground balls. Kelly, who in three season tallied over 150 points, has established himself among the top attackmen in the country.

The team finishes the regular season with a 8-5 record, with two of its losses by only one goal -- Randolph Macon, 6-5 in overtime, and St. Mary's, 13-12. Some noteworthy team CAC statistical rankings include: first in save percentage; second in assists and total points per game, shooting percentage, saves per game and penalty killing percentage; and third in goals per game.

Summary
The 2005 Cardinals Men’s Lacrosse season concluded Saturday, April 16, with a hard fought 11-10 loss to Mary Washington in the first round of the Capitol Athletic Conference playoffs.  The team rebounded from a 17-8 loss to Mary Washington in the regular season to mount a terrific comeback late in the game while down four goals in the fourth quarter. Head Coach Brooks Singer summed it up saying, “It was a tough loss, especially after losing the game before to St Mary's, 13-12, in another battle to the end, but it showed the true character of this team -- that it just never quits.”

The team finishes the regular season with a 8-5 record, with two of those losses by only one goal -- Randolph Macon, 6-5 in overtime, and St. Mary’s, 13-12. Some noteworthy team CAC statistical rankings include: first in save percentage; second in assists and total points per game, shooting percentage, saves per game and penalty killing percentage; and third in goals per game. 

Notable individual stats include: The attack unit of Tom “Champ” Alexander, Conor Kelly and Terence Kempf combined for 133 total points; the offensive midfield unit of Kyle Carson, Mike Finegan, David Morin, Ryan Murphy, Phil Reinckens and Colin Whitaker combined for 85 total points; Sean Agnew and Ryan Napolitano combined to win more than 100 faceoffs; defensive midfielders Chris Appel, Justin Boyer, Tim Checchia and Tim Farrell combined for more than 100 groundballs; the defensive unit of Jerry Clifford, Chris “Juice” Hartel, Greg Lyons and Ben Mullen combined for more than 100 takeaways; and goalies Andrew Couden and Greg Kavazanjian combined for more than 200 saves.

Despite the departure of a talented senior class and assistant coach Brendan Sullivan, Singer says the program seeks to build on its 2005 success and will soon announce the "terrific recruiting class," who will join the 24 returning players in 2006. “The Cardinals are made up of an absolutely wonderful group of student-athletes," Singer said. "They are an extremely special group and we cannot be more proud of them.” 

The team also finished the year with a strong academic showing (just shy of a 3.0 cumulative team grade point average)from seven architects, five engineers and a represenative of "just about every other major at the university." In sum Singer said, “I have to thank our biggest fans -- a group of dedicated parents, grandparents, relatives and friends, who came to cheer us on every game.  We just can’t wait to get things going in 2006!”
