Cardinals fall to regional powerhouse Juniata
Catholic in NCAA Tournament, By Barbara TalbotGETTYSBURG, Pa. — The 2001 season came to an end as Catholic was overwhelmed by Juniata 3-0 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Final. Game scores were 30-20, 30-19, and 30-13.

The Eagles advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament where they will meet the winner of the South Region next weekend. Catholic ends the season with a 38-3 record including a school-record 21-game win streak.

Catholic found itself behind early in each match and had trouble penetrating the Juniata defense as the Cardinals could only produce 23 kills for the entire match. Seniors Kelly Kings (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic) and Liz Carden (Baker, Fla./Baker) and sophomore Kathleen McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) each had five kills apiece.

Juniata (28-8), ranked in the AVCA Top 10 all season, never trailed in the match. The Eagles had three players finish with double-digit kills. Niki Mueller led all attackers with her 17 kills. Juniata received most of their points courtesy of 12 service aces. Danielle Hart collected six service aces to lead the Eagles.

The first set saw Catholic trail early by no more than five points at 13-8, but Juniata went on an 11-4 run to open their lead up. The Cardinals would get as close as 27-20 but the Eagles spiked their way to three straight points to take the first game.

In the second game, Catholic fell behind 3-2 and saw the Eagles score 11 straight points. The Cardinals would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Juniata turned it on in the third game as the Eagles used a 13-2 run late to clinch the match and advance to the quarterfinal.

Senior Alexis Rollert (Comstock Park, Mich./West Catholic) shoveled out a team-high 14 digs while Mary Ellen Ryan (Gulph Mills, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) was held to just three kills after pounding out 10 kills the night before. Junior Liz Schreiner (West Chester, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) chipped in three kills and three blocks.
